Based on Thomas Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles, TRISHNA tells the story of one woman whose life is destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances. Freida Pinto (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE) stars in this update set in contemporary India and directed by Michael Winterbottom (THE TRIP, 9 SONGS). While working at a hotel to supplement her family’s income, she falls in love with the son of the wealthy owner. Despite their feelings, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialization, urbanization and, above all, education.
