NOW PLAYING
A DANGEROUS METHOD
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8
Viggo Mortensen and director David Cronenberg (HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES) team up to great effect once again in A DANGEROUS METHOD. Their new, wildly sexual collaboration stars Mortensen as pioneering psychologist Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender as friendly rival Carl Jung and Keira Knightley as the comely patient who makes their rivalry less friendly. When Fassbender and Knightley become involved in a slap–happy, sadomasochistic relationship, all sorts of psychological barriers come tumbling down. Christopher Hampton, of DANGEROUS LIAISONS and ATONEMENT acclaim, wrote the screenplay.
ALBERT NOBBS
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8
This haunting adaptation of acclaimed Irish writer George Moore’s short story is Glenn Close’s cherished project. Having starred in the 1982 stage production, she produced, co–wrote and has received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the film. Close plays the title character: a woman masquerading as a man in 1890’s Ireland, where a woman’s lot was not an easy one. A fastidious hotel server with dreams of owning a tobacco shop, her dreams are threatened when she casts eyes on a comely co–worker played by Mia Wasikowska, who won praise as JANE EYRE’s title character. Rodrigo Garcia (MOTHER AND CHILD, TV series “In Treatment”) directs.
SHAME
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8
A daring sophomore feature for award winning British filmmaker Steve McQueen (2008’s HUNGER) and a hit at the AFI and Venice Film Festivals, SHAME stars Michael Fassbender (JANE EYRE, A DANGEROUS METHOD) in an Oscar-worthy role as a New Yorker with a compulsive addiction to sex. His carefully cultivated private life is disrupted when his sister (Carey Mulligan, DRIVE, AN EDUCATION) moves into his apartment, stirring memories of their shared painful past. With poignance and skill, McQueen explores a different kind of hunger in this harrowing and atmospheric film.
THE ARTIST
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8
One of the most joyous and clever cinematic experiences in years, director Michel Hazanavicius’ THE ARTIST is a favorite for this year’s Academy Awards with 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. A silent film shot entirely in black and white, it follows dashing 1920s silent movie star George Valentin, played by Jean Dujardin in an exquisite Oscar–nominated performance. With the arrival of talkies, George’s career starts to fade, while beautiful young actress Peppy Miller’s (Berenic Bejo) star begins to rise. John Goodman, James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Miller deliver strong supporting roles in this wonderfully romantic and inventive film.
THE DESCENDENTS
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8, Ward 16, Pearlridge West 16, Mililani 14, Kapolei 16, Koolau 10, Kukui Mall 4
Nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, THE DESCENDENTS is a sharply observed comic drama from Oscar nominee (and previous winner) Alexander Payne (SIDEWAYS). George Clooney stars as Matt King, a middle aged lawyer under pressure to sell the massive plot of land entrusted to him as the descendent of Hawaiian royalty while struggling to keep his family together. Backed by a strong supporting cast that includes Robert Forster as Matt’s father–in–law and Shailene Woodley (THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER) in a standout turn as Matt’s teenaged daughter, Clooney’s Oscar-nominated performance is one of the finest and most mature of his career.
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8
Swedish helmer Tomas Alfredson, whose LET THE RIGHT ONE IN brought chills to worldwide audiences, directs this Cold War espionage thriller from the pen of John le Carre (THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD). With a cast headed by Gary Oldman (the BATMAN and HARRY POTTER franchises) in an Oscar–nominated performance, last year’s winner Colin Firth (THE KING’S SPEECH), and Tom Hardy (INCEPTION), this intelligent thriller is as rich in pedigree as it is in double–and–triple crosses.
THE IRON LADY
NOW PLAYING: Kahala 8, Ward 16, Kaahumanu 6
Meryl Streep stars as the first female Prime Minister of the UK, Margaret Thatcher, in this surprising and intimate portrait of one of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, who came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world. Already winning a Golden Globe and a slew of accolades from international film critics, Streep is a favorite in this year’s Oscar race thanks to a performance critics are calling “marvelous” and “the best of the year!”
COMING SOON
A SEPARATION
OPENING 2/10: Kahala 8
This intense Iranian drama is a favorite in this year’s Academy Awards Best Foreign Film race. It already has an armload of awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the Berlin International Film Festival's coveted Golden Bear. A SEPARATION depicts the emotional trials of a once–loving couple torn apart by the wife’s desire that their daughter will have a better life. Director Asghar Farhadi cast his daughter Sarina as the couple's 11 year old offspring, who is forced to make a heartbreaking decision for reasons she cannot understand.
